Jean-Ulrick Désert’s works emerge from a tradition of conceptual work engaged with social and cultural practices, characterized as visualizing “conspicuous invisibility.” He has exhibited at Brooklyn Museum, Contemporary Arts Museum of Houston, Grey Art Gallery NYU/Studio Museum of Harlem, Walker Art Center, graduating from Cooper Union and Columbia University.

WE ARE EVERYWHERE

Jean-Ulrick Désert’s “WE ARE EVERYWHERE” uses the language of protest and urgency as its title. He highlights text taken from the LGBT liberation movement, specifically the edict by the Caribbean born poet, Audre Lorde, “YOUR SILENCE WILL NOT PROTECT YOU”. These concepts remain prophetic and relevant today, beyond issues of sexuality or gender, and regardless of political specificity. The artist believes we stand on the shoulders of others who have struggled before us, and that these histories should be memorialized in public spaces whether that be in the form of monuments, banners, posters or buttons.
